Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta is an interesting and unique place - a 16000 km2 maze of breathtaking lagoons, channels, and islands.

Okavango Delta

Botswana's Okavango Delta is possibly the best safari destination on earth as it offers a complete all round safari experience. You can fly over it, drive around it, take a boat or canoe on the waterways and even swim in it (if you dare)!

The Okavango's emerald swirls of winding channels, tranquil lily lagoons and grass floodplains can even be seen from outer space. The delta is an alluvial fan fed by the Okavango River, which originates in the highlands of Angola 1,280 km (800 miles) away.

Water Levels

Local rains and Angolan floodwater determine the amount of water in the delta, which fluctuates with the seasons. Water levels usually peak in central Okavango by June or July each year, while at the end of the dry season in October, many channels have dried up.

Private Game Lodges

The Okavango Delta is separated into a number of private game concessions where exclusive private lodges are located. These surround the state-run Moremi Game Reserve, which also contains many top-class lodges. There are no fences separating the different management areas and animals can move as they please.
